What to expect at your first golf club fitting

A professional golf club fitting is one of the best investments you can make in your game — but if you have never done one before, it can feel a little intimidating. Here is what to expect from start to finish.

Before you arrive

Bring your current clubs. A good fitter will want to see what you are playing now and understand what is working and what is not. Wear the shoes you normally golf in, and try to arrive having played or practised recently — a cold, nervous swing on the day will not give the fitter an accurate picture.

Be honest about your game. Tell the fitter your typical miss, your average distances, and what you are trying to fix. The more context they have, the better the recommendation.

The fitting session

Most fittings take place on a launch monitor — a device that captures data on every shot you hit. The common systems you will see are TrackMan, Foresight GC Quad, FlightScope, and Bushnell Launch Pro. These tools measure clubhead speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and carry distance among other things.

You will hit shots with your current clubs first so the fitter has a baseline. Then they will cycle through different shaft options, head configurations, and loft and lie adjustments, watching how the numbers change with each combination.

A full bag fitting typically takes two to three hours. An individual club fitting — just irons, or just a driver — usually runs 60 to 90 minutes.

What you will receive

At the end of the session, the fitter will give you a recommendation — specific club models, shaft options, loft and lie settings, grip size, and club length. Most fitters provide this in writing.

You are not obligated to buy on the day. Some fitters charge a fitting fee that is credited toward a purchase; others charge a standalone fee regardless. Always ask upfront.

How to prepare mentally

You do not need to swing your best to benefit from a fitting. In fact, fitters see every standard of player. A fitting is designed around your swing as it is right now — not the swing you are working toward. Show up, swing naturally, and let the data do the work.
